MWMS Newsletter, 12/1/17

From the Principal’s Desk

Happy December!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and enjoyed the time with your family and friends.   Thank you to everyone who came to Mayfield to help with our book fair, support our school play, donate to our PBIS bake sale, join us for our “Meet and Greets” and participate in parent/teacher conferences – it was simply fantastic to have you at our school. In addition, thank you to our PTA and all of the parents who donated food for the annual fall conference staff dinner.    We enjoyed an assortment of delicious chili and all of the accoutrements that go along with it, in addition to corn bread and desserts. Thank you for supporting our staff – many of whom stayed late both nights and would not have had time to leave school to get dinner.   We are most appreciative!

Whats the JumpStart programHCPSS has announced an innovative program that enables students to earn up to 60 college credits while in high school. We had a parent meeting at Mayfield Woods last night, but if you missed it – don’t worry!  There are several more meetings in the upcoming weeks.  Click here for more information about the program, in addition to meeting dates and locations.

The weather is beginning to get much colder, so please encourage your child to dress appropriately on such days.  As a reminder, students are not permitted to wear coats in school.  They may, however, wear layers - including sweatshirts or sweaters - in case they get chilly.  It is important that students are dressed appropriately for PE and recess; in accordance with HCPSS guidelines, children will go outside unless there is precipitation or the outside temperature combined with the wind chill drops below 20 degrees. For more information, click here

Do you drive your child to school?  If so, we kindly ask that you avoid parking in the “drop-off” lane, even if you are in the car.  If you need to park, please use our parking lot so that we can keep the drop-off lane moving.  We want to maintain a safe drop-off for our students. When cars park in this lane, it causes a back-up and/or other cars have to pull-around, creating a potentially unsafe situation.  Thanks for your understanding and support!

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest deadline has been extended until next Friday, December 8, 2017, at 5:00 PM.   The event’s theme this year is, "If I cannot do great things, I will do small things in a great way" and the essay theme is, "How do you translate Dr. King's vision in today's times?Click here for more information.

Bulldog BRAG Board! Thanks to the parents and families who have been bragging about your children!  Keep the good news coming!  Click here to learn more and for a copy of the BRAG form/directions on how to submit it!

In the next two weeks we have a lot of exciting things going on at Mayfield: two band concerts, an orchestra concert, a chorus concert, the Council of Elders Celebration, the schoolwide spelling bee, talent show tryouts, and family “makerspace” workshop, Hispanic parent night, the Hour of Code, and the #onemayfield event for 6th graders.    Click here to visit our school calendar for exact dates and times, and we hope to see you at some of these events!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Melissa Shindel
Principal

The Johns Hopkins Center for Language and Speech Processing invites any high school or middle school students who might be interested in language, psychology, math, or computer science to come to our campus for Puzzles, Pizza, and Prizes and to take part in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO). Computational linguistics is the science of understanding human language using logic, computer algorithms, and math. It is all around us! You use computational linguistics whenever you use Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Yahoo, and many other websites and applications. If you watched IBM's Watson take on Jeopardy champions several years ago, that was computational linguistics in action!

NACLO Main Events:

The first round competition, which selects the U.S. team for the International Linguistics Olympiad, is scheduled for Thursday, January 25, 2018. We are hosting an informational training session with Puzzles, Pizza, and Prizes on Saturday, January 13, 2018 on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. We will help your students prepare for the competition and learn about computational linguistics (and how it's used in cool research at major tech companies). They'll learn new ways to solve problems and puzzles, work together with other students, and earn prizes. Anyone is welcome to come to the practice session even if they can't make it to the competition! NACLO is open to students regardless of their background in math, science, linguistics, or languages.

Our website has more information about NACLO and Computational Linguistics: http://naclo.clsp.jhu.edu

You can find example problems on the NACLO site: http://nacloweb.org/
