#onemayfield Days are Coming Soon!

Fri, 10/06/2017 - 6:03am

Last year we started our #onemayfield campaign at Mayfield Woods, celebrating diversity, unity and community.   Since its inception, we feel strongly that every single person who enters our doors will know that at Mayfield we value our diversity.  We celebrate the uniqueness of each individual child, parent, staff member, and member of our community and we believe that our different perspectives, backgrounds and cultures make us stronger.

This year, we will continue our #onemayfield campaign, whereas our vision and goals are as follows:
  • #onemayfield Vision: Mayfield Woods is an inclusive environment, where every member of our community supports and values each other.
  • #onemayfield Goals:     We will create a space for the Mayfield Woods community to authentically interact across differences to:

Three days this semester we are hosting grade level #onemayfield days, facilitated by folks from the HCPSS Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in partnership with the Howard County Government’s Department of Community Resources and Services.   #onemayfield and #onehoward are working together to create an opportunity for students and staff to come together in a facilitated discussion designed to highlight, celebrate, and honor the differences that exist between us. We believe that to be a community known for civility and inclusiveness, we must first seek to understand and empathize with one another. During this event, our students and staff will begin to thoughtfully engage in dialogue dispelling the narrative that we can only connect through similarities or shared experiences. The event will culminate with student input and suggestions for action that promotes a more inclusive community.

Each student will participate in a 2.5 hour #onemayfield day.  One day is dedicated to each grade, with half of the grade participating in the morning, and the other half of the grade participating in the afternoon, as follows:

  • October 19 - 7th grade

  • November 2 - 8th grade

  • December 14 - 6th grade

We believe these days are going to be a wonderful experience for our staff and students.  If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Shindel.  If you would prefer that your child not participate, please contact Mrs. Shindel two days prior to your child’s scheduled date so that alternate arrangements can be made.
